Tobias Merz is a Classical Singer and Development Officer with the Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation. Tobias is based on the coast and champions the transformative power of the arts.

For Tobias Merz, a life in the arts has always been second nature. Born in New Zealand, he pursued classical singing, studying in Holland before embarking on a stellar international career that saw him saw him perform with world-renowned companies, including Opera Australia, English National Opera, and Scottish Opera. For Tobias, the culmination of these experiences isn’t just about the places he’s performed, it’s about the community he’s building now on the Sunshine Coast.


“My work has always been about making the arts accessible and bringing people together. There’s something so powerful about seeing people connect through art,’ he says.

Since moving to Maleny, Tobias has embraced the Sunshine Coast’s flourishing arts scene. Tobias is quick to note the Sunshine Coast is more than a beautiful destination; it’s a region ripe for artistic growth.

As the new heart of the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore City Centre is helping shape this artistic renaissance. At the heart of the masterplan is a is a place-based approach designed to facilitate a stronger community by providing opportunities for people to connect and engage.  Tobias sees these developments as pivotal, especially for attracting and nurturing talent.

“What’s exciting about the City Centre is that it’s not just a place for commerce; it’s a platform for community and creativity,” Tobias shares. “With its central location and growing cultural infrastructure, it’s setting the stage for a cosmopolitan lifestyle that’s deeply connected to the arts.”

In his role as Development Officer with the Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation, Tobias is championing a culture of philanthropy that ensures local artists can thrive. The Foundation’s Gifted program offers $5,000 grants to individuals artists, delivering essential support to those shaping and enriching the region’s cultural identity.

“We’re creating an environment where the arts can flourish,” he says. “Money raised here stays here, directly supporting artists who are part of our community. It’s about building an artistic legacy for the Sunshine Coast.”
