Urban Square is designed to be a more local, intimate open space than other parkland areas of the City Centre. This city parkland is a place of lunchtime retreat and local recreation for residents and office workers, and can in the evenings be the location for smaller events and organised activities.
The Corso is the city’s active waterway that will act as an East-West spine through the CBD with the Entertainment and Cultural Centre and Transit Plaza anchoring it at each end. Events and performances along this waterway will bring the public realm to life day and night, and ensure a strong community engagement with the evolving city centre. The Corso will be a highly active retail, transport, and dining cityscape and the central focus for the public realm of the site, providing a destination in itself, as well as a setting for events, nightlife, entertainment, al fresco food and cafes, as well as quiet relaxation and smaller group retreat.
The Community Facilities and Entertainment Precinct is intended to deliver a new entertainment, arts and convention activity centre comparable to Brisbane’s Southbank and Cultural precinct. This will service the greater Sunshine Coast region as no other facility on this size or scale currently exists in the state outside of Brisbane. Located on the edge of the central lake and the new city centre, this precinct will accommodate major entertainment, tourism and community events. Featuring architectural excellence, high quality landscape and waterway treatments, public art and plaza spaces, the built form will reflect contemporary, sub-tropical and coastal architecture, whilst incorporating sustainability and energy efficiency targets.
The residential parkland areas will generally be smaller and more local in character, essentially providing local access to recreation and greenspace for residents and workers in the urban village. City users can expect to make use of recreational facilities in these parks with provisions for small and night events such as cinema in the park, etc.
Civic Park Plaza
Civic Park Plaza is a reflective, celebratory and commemorative open space. A highly accessible community gathering parkway it will include the library, a play space, open lawns, sculpture court and pathway connections.
The Transit Plaza will be a robust, attractive and shaded public transport hub designed to be a strategic gateway for all modes of commuting integrated with a retail and dining space.
It is planned the Transit Plaza will feature shaded seating, public art and sculpture gardens and will function as the central interchange for:
- The Sunshine Coast’s future light rail system
- The bus network
- Future passenger rail advances
- Safe accessible transport routes
- Disabled access and drop off point
The design of this public space will embody the character of the entire city-building project and set the standard for Lake Parklands as a feature element of this development and other large-scale urban reconstruction projects around the globe. There will be a variety of lake edge experiences, wetlands and waters edges to explore, with the opportunity to get out on the water and launch canoes and kayaks. The plan includes bridges, terraces, high and low level lakeside boardwalks, a range of shelters and bbq sites as well as a signature adventure play area in the central parkland. Taxi and disabled drop off areas will be identified. The lake parkland areas will also contain a range of opportunities for public artworks and structures to enhance the user’s experience and views of the city and further beyond the Priority Development Area.
